At an elegant ceremony held at Byzance Restaurant in Johannesburg Metzuyan on the square was honoured with the first Fine Dining award ever being awarded to a kosher restaurant. The selection criteria for the award include cuisine, service (including menu and wine knowledge), wine list, dcor and ambience as well as overall excellence and high levels of consistency. Victor Strugo, well known food critic reviews restaurants for a number of publications and is selector for the programme. Several of the winners, such as The Tasting Room at Le Quartier Francais, La Colombeare and Jardine are featured in the Worlds 50 best restaurants, which places Metzuyan up there with some of the best in the world. It is an exceptional achievement for a kosher restaurant with its inherent limitations to even be considered in the same light as American Express Platinum fine dining endorsed restaurants and eateries, let alone be successful in receiving induction in to this prestigious club . The owners of Metzuyan have commented saying, When we first envisaged Metzuyan and what we endeavoured to create, we always hoped to one day be fortunate enough to receive an acknowledgement of this calibre and with it this very humbling award and induction in to such an exclusive club of profound repute. It is testament to the high levels we have strived to achieve and maintain in all aspects of the business and the hard work and dedication of all our valuable staff. We set out to uplift the level of kosher dining in Johannesburg and in so doing to bring a positive and refreshing reputation to kosher cuisine as a whole. ----- METZUYAN- (ex- On the square steakhouse)- the place reopened in mid 2007 after being renovated, and functions under its new name "Metzuyan". The food stayed great and the service is very high level, without any doubt- the best kosher resturant in all of South Africa. The place is usually full- no seat is available, so it's recomended to book in advance. On saturday nights be prepared to wait outside.
